About Ian Taylor

My paintings are recollections, influences and memories of growing up in a small seaside town called Redcar on the North East coast of England in the 50's and 60's    My father was a steelworker, and my mother a still-room maid at Longleat Estate, before the Second World War.

I grew up in a council house on an estate called Dormanstown, after the steel works of Dorman Long. For me it was idyllic, a street full of kids, the sea nearby, and the moors our backdoor. I think my generation was the last of working class teenagers going on to college with a free grant. My passion led me to art school. Three years spent painting and drawing everyday and learning how to look and gain knowledge of the craft.

Teaching became my breadwinner and I enjoyed the interaction with kids. I have married twice, and have four children and a lovely granddaughter. I live in New Zealand, still putting paint on canvas. What you see is a selection of paintings that spans fifty five years.
